Contact lens wear and COVID-19

Contact lens wearers can keep wearing their lenses.
There is currently no evidence to suggest that there is an increased risk of infection or contracting coronavirus through contact lens wear.  At this time there is no recommendation to discontinue contact lens wear.

Good hygiene habits are critical.
To avoid possible infection (even under normal circumstances) it is very important to wash your hands thoroughly before handling your contact lens case and contact lenses. As an added prevention also wash your hands after putting your contact lenses in. Wash your hands again before and after contact lens removal. Keep unwashed hands away from the face.

It is also recommended that you follow all manufacturer instructions for proper cleaning and disinfection listed on your contact lens solution bottle. Only use fresh solution when cleaning and storing your contact lenses.

If you are sick, temporarily stop wearing contact lenses.
Consistent with recommendations for other types of illness, if contact wearers feel ill with cold or flu-like symptoms, they should revert to using glasses. They can speak with their optometrist once they feel well again, and preferably get a new set of lenses.
